Asimov

Outro comentário semelhante é do grande escritor Orson Scott Card:

"Isaac Asimov was the finest writer of the American Plain Style that I've ever read. His prose is so lucid that you always understand everything he wrote, as if he injected the ideas directly into your brain—and the needle didn't even hurt! "

Além de ler os livros da série original da Fundação ( Prelude to Foundation, Forward the Foundation, Foundation, Foundation and Empire, Second Foundation, Foundation's Edge e Foundation and Earth.), é obrigatório ler os chamados livros da Fundação ampliada, que incluem os livros sobre Robôs ( I, Robot, The Caves of Steel, The Naked Sun , The Robots of Dawn, e Robots and Empire) e a criação do Império Galático (The Stars, Like Dust ,The Currents of Space e Pebble in the Sky) que foram todos costurados em um mesmo universo.

Meus favoritos -The Caves of Steel, Pebble in the Sky, Robots and Empire, Foundation, Foundation's Edge e Foundation and Earth.

Novas Aquisições - The Second Foundation Trilogy

Foundation's Fear - Gregory Benford
Foundation and Chaos - Greg Bear
Foundation's Triumph - David Brin

Foundation and Chaos e Foundation's Triumph).
E Allen sabe prender a atenção do leitor.

Foundations's Triumph

Foundation and Chaos

Arnold Zellner 1927-2010

Arnold Zellner, a leading economist at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business who pioneered the field of Bayesian econometrics, died August 11 at his home in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago. He was 83 and suffered a stroke while battling cancer.

Zellner was known for the breadth of his contributions to many different areas of econometrics. His pioneering work in systems of equations, Bayesian statistics and econometrics, or time series analysis would each have earned him worldwide recognition.

In addition to his prodigious theoretical work, Zellner fostered applications in fisheries conservation, production theory, forecasting, and many other fields. In both his theoretical and applied research, Zellner believed that complicated problems can be solved by the application of a few powerful, simplifying concepts, what he called “sophisticated simplicity.”

“Arnold Zellner was one of the pioneers of modern econometrics,” said Eugene Fama, Robert R. McCormick Distinguished Service Professor of Finance at Chicago Booth. “He was one of the original giants in the rise of Chicago Booth to the business school research pinnacle. Arnold was a dedicated, creative, and prolific researcher for more than 50 years. He and his lovely wife Agnes have also been great personal friends,” Fama said.

Zellner’s achievements include founding two major journals, organizing two National Bureau of Economic Research/National Science Foundation seminar series, and supervising more than 30 Ph.D. dissertations in economics, finance, econometrics and statistics.

Zeller retired from teaching in 1996 after 30 years on the Chicago Booth faculty, but he remained active at the school until a few months ago, doing research, publishing papers in academic journals and advising students on how to achieve their career goals.

An award-winning teacher, Zellner published more than 200 scholarly articles and 22 books and monographs, including An Introduction to Bayesian Inference in Econometrics, J. Wiley and Sons, Inc., 1971 and Basic Issues in Econometrics, University of Chicago Press, 1984.

Bayesian econometrics and statistics uses mathematical and quantitative techniques to analyze economic problems. Zeller founded the International Society of Bayesian Analysis.

In 1962, Zellner published what became one of the most cited articles in econometrics, “An Efficient Method of Estimating Seemingly Unrelated Regressions and Tests for Aggregation Bias,” in the Journal of the American Statistical Association.

Zellner’s commitment and service to the econometrics profession is well-known. What is perhaps less well-known is his commitment to his colleagues and students. In addition to teaching M.B.A. courses in econometrics and Bayesian inference in econometrics, Zellner taught several Ph.D. courses. He was the H.G. B. Alexander Distinguished Service Professor of Economics and Statistics and director of Booth’s H.G. B. Alexander Research Foundation.

“Arnold Zellner was a passionate teacher and was very effective in the classroom,” said John P. Gould, Steven G. Rothmeier Professor and Distinguished Service Professor of Economics at Booth. For many years, Zellner and Gould ran the school’s weekly workshop in economics and econometrics for Ph.D. students in collaboration with fellow faculty member B. Peter Pashigian.

“In addition to helping M.B.A. students, Arnold was enormously helpful to Ph.D. students during his 44 years at Chicago Booth as a faculty member and an emeritus faculty member,” Gould said.

Beyond his strong commitment to teaching and research, Zellner was also known for his work to solve social and economic problems such as famine, unemployment, and economic stagnation.

Zellner received the prestigious McKinsey Award for Excellence in Teaching at Booth in 1984 and he established the B. Peter Pashigian Lecture Fund and Lecture Series in 2001. Pashigian was a long-time colleague of Zellner’s on the Booth faculty.

Zellner was a fellow of the Econometric Society, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a distinguished fellow of the American Economic Association.

He also was president and a fellow of the American Statistical Association, and was a fellow of the International Institute of Forecasters and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Zellner began his career in 1955 as an assistant professor of economics at the University of Washington, Seattle. In 1961, he joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and then moved to Chicago Booth in 1966.

While at Booth he served as director of the Ph.D. program in 1969 and 1970. He was a consultant to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, co-editor of the Journal of Econometrics, and founding editor of the ASA Journal of Business and Economic Statistics. He also was associate editor of Econometrica and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Economic Literature.

He was chairman of the American Statistical Association’s business and economic statistics section and a director of the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Zellner was honored as the outstanding statistician of the year in 1982 by the Chicago Chapter of the American Statistical Association. The award was in recognition of his accomplishments in both theory and application of statistics and econometrics.

Zellner received an A.B. in physics from Harvard in 1949 and served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. After his military service, he earned a Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1957.

Zellner received honorary doctoral degrees from Erasmus University, Rotterdam, in The Netherlands, University of Kiel in Germany, Universidade Tecnia de Lisboa in Lisbon, Portugal, and Universidad Autonoma de Madrid in Spain.

After retiring from teaching at Chicago Booth in 1996, he spent winters as a visiting professor at the University of California at Berkeley.

Zellner is survived by his wife of 58 years, Agnes, and their five children, David, Philip (Beth), Samuel (Tena), Daniel (Diane) and Michael (Eugenia), four grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and many close friends, colleagues and former students.

A memorial service will be held on October 18, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at Bond Chapel at the University of Chicago, 1050 E. 59th Street.

The Long Now

Anathem is a speculative fiction novel by Neal Stephenson, published in 2008. Major themes include the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics and the philosophical debate between Platonic realism and formalism.

Anathem is set on and around the planet Arbre. Thousands of years prior to the events in the novel, society was on the verge of collapse. Intellectuals entered concents, much like monastic communities but focused on intellectual endeavors rather than religious practice. Here, the avout— intellectuals living under vows and separated from saecular society, fraa for male avout and suur for female avout—retain only limited access to tools and technology and are watched over by the Inquisition, which answers to the outside world (known as the Sæcular Power). The avout are forbidden to communicate with people outside the walls of the concent except during Apert, a 10-day observance held only once every year, decade, century, or millennium, depending on the frequency with which a given group of avout is allowed to interact with the Sæcular world. Concents are therefore slow to change, unlike the rest of Arbre, which goes through many cycles of booms and busts.

O interessante é a relação do livro com os projetos da fundação Long Now :

The Long Now Foundation was established in 01996* to develop the Clock and Library projects , as well as to become the seed of a very long-term cultural institution. The Long Now Foundation hopes to provide counterpoint to today's "faster/cheaper" mind set and promote "slower/better" thinking. We hope to creatively foster responsibility in the framework of the next 10,000 years.

Leitura do Dia - Empirical Likelihood Estimators for Stochastic Discount Factors

Empirical Likelihood Estimators for Stochastic Discount Factors

December 23, 2008

Abstract:
Hansen and Jagannathan (HJ, 1991) provided bounds on the volatility of Stochastic Discount Factors (SDF) that proved extremely useful to diagnose and test asset pricing models. This nonparametric bound reflects a duality between the mean-standard deviation frontier for SDFs and the mean-variance frontier for portfolios of asset returns. We extend this fundamental contribution by proposing information bounds that minimize general convex functions of SDFs directly taking into account higher moments of returns. These Minimum Discrepancy bounds reflect a duality with finding the optimal portfolio of asset returns with a general HARA utility function. The maximum utility portfolio implies SDF estimators that are based on implied probabilities associated with the class of Generalized Empirical Likelihood estimators. We analyze the implications of these information bounds for the pricing of size portfolios and the performance evaluation of hedge funds.

Essa é a Unicamp que dá orgulho

Waldyr Rodrigues é o novo editor-chefe da Advances in Applied Clifford Algebras.

Da wikipedia:

Waldyr Alves Rodrigues, Jr. was born at Araraquara, SP, Brazil on March 14, 1946. He obtained his B.Sc. in Physics in 1968 at the University of São Paulo (Brazil), where he has been a research student of Mário Schenberg (one of the top Brazilian theoretical physicists) and became an Assistant Professor in 1969. He then moved to Torino, Italy where he did post-graduate studies at the Scuola di Perfezionamento in Fisica Nucleare and obtained a degree (equivalent to Ph.D.) in theoretical Nuclear Physics in 1971. At the same year he returned to Brazil and became an Associate Professor at the new Physics Institute of Campinas State University (UNICAMP).

He worked there with Cesare M. G. Lattes (one of the discoverers of the π-meson) on multiple particle production (particularly the so called centauro events) produced by collisions of very high energy cosmic rays with atmosphere and/or target atoms. During the seventies he progressively moved his research interest to Mathematical Physics and in 1981 he moved to the Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Computation (IMECC-UNICAMP) where he became a Full Professor of Mathematical Physics in 1986 and retired 1998, serving after that period as a invited professor. Hagakure

Among the maxims on Lord Naoshige's wall there was this one: ''Matters of' great concern should be treated lightly.'' Master lttei commented, "Matters of small concern should be treated seriously." Among one's affairs there should not be more than two or three matters of what one could call great concern. If these are deliberated upon during ordinary times, they can be understood. Thinking about things previously and then handling them lightly when the time comes
is what this is all about. To face an event anew solve it lightly is difficult if you are not resolved beforehand, and there will always be uncertainty in hitting your mark. However, if the foundation is laid previously, you can think of the saying, "Matters of great concern should be treated lightly," as your own basis for action.

Foundation's Fear

lidos e relidos

Fates Worse Than Death, Kurt Vonnegut e Forward The Foundation, Isaac Asimov.

Coordination Failures and the Lender of Last Resort:
Was Bagehot Right After All?

Abstract
The classical doctrine of the Lender of Last Resort, elaborated by Bagehot (1873), asserts that the central bank should lend to “illiquid but solvent” banks under certain conditions. Several
authors have argued that this view is now obsolete: when interbank markets are efficient, a
solvent bank cannot be illiquid. This paper provides a possible theoretical foundation for rescuing
Bagehot’s view. Our theory does not rely on the multiplicity of equilibria that arises in classical
models of bank runs. We build a model of banks’ liquidity crises that possesses a unique Bayesian
equilibrium. In this equilibrium, there is a positive probability that a solvent bank cannot find
liquidity assistance in the market. We derive policy implications about banking regulation
(solvency and liquidity ratios) and interventions of the Lender of Last Resort. Furthermore, we
find that public (bail-out) and private (bail-in) involvement are complementary in implementing
the incentive efficient solution and that Bagehot’s Lender of Last Resort facility has to work
together with institutions providing prompt corrective action and orderly failure resolution.
Finally, we derive similar implications for an international Lender of Last Resort.
Keywords: Central bank policy, interbank market, prudential regulation, liquidity ratio, solvency
ratio, transparency, prompt corrective action, orderly failure resolution, global games,
supermodular games.

Systemic Risk, Interbank Relations and Liquidity Provision by the Central Bank

Xavier Freixas
Bruno Parigi
Jean Charles Rochet

We model systemic risk in an interbank market. Banks face liquidity needs as consumers are uncertain about where they need to consume. Interbank credit lines allow to cope with these liquidity shocks while reducing the cost of maintaining reserves. However, the interbank market exposes the system to a coordination failure (gridlock equilibrium) even if all banks are solvent. When one bank is insolvent, the stability of the banking system is affected in various ways depending on the patterns of payments across locations. We investigate the ability of the banking industry to withstand the insolvency of one bank and whether the closure of one bank generates a chain reaction on the rest of the system. We analyze the coordinating role of the Central Bank in preventing payments systemic repercussions and we examine the justification of the Too-big-to-fail-policy.

The Lender of Last Resort: A 21th Century Approach

FREIXAS, Xavier
PARIGI, Bruno
ROCHET, Jean-Charles

Abstract
The classical Bagehot’s conception of a Lender of Last Resort that lends to illiquid banks has been criticized on two grounds: on the one hand, the distinction between insolvency and illiquidity is not clear cut; on the other a fully collateralized repo market allows Central Banks to provide the adequate aggregated amount of liquidity and leave the responsibility of lending uncollateralized to the banks thus giving them a role as peer monitors.

The first criticism leaves us with no theory of a Lender of Last Resort, while the second leaves us with no Lender of Last Resort in theory. The object of this paper is to analyze rigorously these issues by providing a framework where liquidity shocks cannot be distinguished from solvency ones and ask whether there is a need for a Lender of Last Resort and how should it operate. Determining the optimal Lender of Last Resort policy requires a careful modeling of the structure of the interbank market and of the closure policy. In our set up, the results depend upon the existence of moral hazard. If the main source of moral hazard is the banks’ lack of incentives to screen loans, then the Lender of Last Resort may have to intervene to improve the e¢ciency of an unsecured interbank market; if instead, the main source of moral hazard is loans monitoring, then the interbank market should be secured and the Lender of Last Resort should never intervene.

O episódio 8 "Travels and Space and Time" eu me lembro como se tivesse assistido hoje.
"Psychohistory is the name of a fictional science, which combined history, sociology, and mathematical statistics, in Isaac Asimov's Foundation universe, to create a (nearly) exact science of the actions of very large groups of people"

Terminei hoje de ler a última parte da série Fundação do Isaac Asimov, Prelude to the Foundation.

Quinta feira acabam as provas do primeiro semestre no doutorado.
Isaac Asimov - "Prelude to Foundation".

A Fundação e a econometria.

¨The Multidimensional surfaces representing economic variables were like twisted bottles filled with - as Yugo time-stepped them - sloshing fluids. The liquids of yellow and amber and virulent red flowed around and trough each other in a supple, slow dance. Hari was perpetually amazed at how beauty arose in the most unlikely ways from mathematics. Yugo had plotted abstruse econometric quantities, yet in the gravid sway of centuries they made delicate arabesques."

Foundation's Fear, Gregory Benford.

Unified Growth Theory - Oded Galor

Além disso o livro aborda outros trabalhos de Galor, como o polêmico "Out of Africa".
