Institutional Logics and Tie Formation: Jazz Field, 1930-1969

ABSTRACT

From the thirties to the sixties, the Jazz field migrated from a homogenous to a style
heterogeneous field, and incorporated to its popular and folk idioms a high art form. Style
affiliation became a prominent institutional logic governing tie formation. This is tested against
other alternative explanations. Age at the field, number of sessions recorded, and network
centrality were found to be resilient explanatory factors. Race and nationality became less
important mediating factors, as jazz became more international and less race segregated. The
importance of style affiliation increases in tandem with heterogeneity.
