The Long Now

Estou aproveitando as "férias" para ler Anathem, de Neal Stephenson. Como a maioria dos livros desse autor, não dá para fazer uma leitura ligeira:

Anathem is a speculative fiction novel by Neal Stephenson, published in 2008. Major themes include the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics and the philosophical debate between Platonic realism and formalism.

Anathem is set on and around the planet Arbre. Thousands of years prior to the events in the novel, society was on the verge of collapse. Intellectuals entered concents, much like monastic communities but focused on intellectual endeavors rather than religious practice. Here, the avout— intellectuals living under vows and separated from saecular society, fraa for male avout and suur for female avout—retain only limited access to tools and technology and are watched over by the Inquisition, which answers to the outside world (known as the Sæcular Power). The avout are forbidden to communicate with people outside the walls of the concent except during Apert, a 10-day observance held only once every year, decade, century, or millennium, depending on the frequency with which a given group of avout is allowed to interact with the Sæcular world. Concents are therefore slow to change, unlike the rest of Arbre, which goes through many cycles of booms and busts.

O interessante é a relação do livro com os projetos da fundação Long Now :

The Long Now Foundation was established in 01996* to develop the Clock and Library projects , as well as to become the seed of a very long-term cultural institution. The Long Now Foundation hopes to provide counterpoint to today's "faster/cheaper" mind set and promote "slower/better" thinking. We hope to creatively foster responsibility in the framework of the next 10,000 years.

Os detalhes da construção do relógio, que é uma parte importante do Anathem, são realmente interessantes.

Sempre fui fascinado por Cápsulas do tempo, e por projetos relacionados como esses da fundação Long Now.

Waldyr Rodrigues é o novo editor-chefe da Advances in Applied Clifford Algebras.

Waldyr Alves Rodrigues, Jr. was born at Araraquara, SP, Brazil on March 14, 1946. He obtained his B.Sc. in Physics in 1968 at the University of São Paulo (Brazil), where he has been a research student of Mário Schenberg (one of the top Brazilian theoretical physicists) and became an Assistant Professor in 1969. He then moved to Torino, Italy where he did post-graduate studies at the Scuola di Perfezionamento in Fisica Nucleare and obtained a degree (equivalent to Ph.D.) in theoretical Nuclear Physics in 1971. At the same year he returned to Brazil and became an Associate Professor at the new Physics Institute of Campinas State University (UNICAMP).

He worked there with Cesare M. G. Lattes (one of the discoverers of the π-meson) on multiple particle production (particularly the so called centauro events) produced by collisions of very high energy cosmic rays with atmosphere and/or target atoms. During the seventies he progressively moved his research interest to Mathematical Physics and in 1981 he moved to the Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Computation (IMECC-UNICAMP) where he became a Full Professor of Mathematical Physics in 1986 and retired 1998, serving after that period as a invited professor. He has also been the director of that Institute from 1994-1998 and also served as vice president for the Foundation for Development of UNICAMP from 1998-2000. He is presently a member of the Coordination Committee of the Clifford Algebras International Research Open Studies (Center CAIROS), Laboratoire de Mathématiques Emile Picard, Institut de Mathématiques de Toulouse, Université Paul Sabatier, Toulouse, France and also a member of the Scientific Council of the Center of Logics, Epistemology and the History of Science (UNICAMP).

Rodrigues is well known for his manifold research interests such as the applications of Clifford Algebras in Mathematical Physics, the study of extraordinary solutions of the relativistic wave equations, the foundations of Quantum Mechanics and Relativity Theory, having given several lectures on those subjects at international meetings. He advised 12 Ph.D. thesis in both Mathematics and Physics ([1]), and is the author of more 130 papers published in leading scientific journals and dozens of chapters of books. More than a hundreed of his papers are reviewed in Mathematics Reviews and the Zentrallblat für Mathematik, and he is also on the editorial board of the journals, Advances in Applied Clifford Algebras ([2]) and Random Operators and Stochastic Equations ([3]). He is a member of the American Mathematical Society, International Association of Mathematical Physics, Brazilian Mathematical Society, Brazilian Society for Applied and Computational Mathematics, Brazilian Physical Society, New York Academy of Sciences and the Lódz Society of Sciences. He won in 1992 and in 1998 the Zeferino Vaz Prize for Academic Achievement in Mathematics. He is author (among others) of the books Nonlocality in Quantum Physics (with A. A. Grib) and The Many Faces of Maxwell, Dirac and Einstein Equations, A Clifford Bundle Approach (with E. Capelas de Oliveira). Rodrigues has been a Visiting Scientist at MIT (USA) in 1976/1978 and Visiting Professor at Trento University (1987/1988), Perugia University (1989) and at Liverpool University (2001/2002). He was elected Chairman of The Telesio Galilei Academy of Science in Oct 2009, and the 2011 new editor in chief of the journal Advances in Applied Clifford Algebras

Mais um passo

Depois de muito trabalho, adiantamos bastante as estimações para a revisão de um artigo. Com as revisões o artigo deve melhorar substancialmente, e os resultados ficaram mais fortes. Ainda resta um bom trabalho, mas já deu um bom ânimo.
Mais ou menos no prazo das metas para essas férias. Agora eu preciso fechar outra revisão e iniciar as estimações para outro artigo.

Pobre povo paulistano, o que fez para receber tamanha punição.

Liquid Sky

Essa é para a galera das antigas - eu conhecia apenas o poster desse filme como uma figurinha dos lendários álbuns Rock Stamp e Stamp Color, que acho que foram lançados em 1985.
Nesse album cada figurinha era uma capa de um disco de rock, de um filme e coisas do tipo. Era adorava esse álbum, e lembro que eu ganhei uns 2 adesivos especiais, que eram disputados no braço entre a molecada. Algumas figurinhas clássicas eram as capas dos álbuns do ZZ Top.
(Com certeza as crianças daquela época sofriam influências bem melhores que as de hoje ...)
Finalmente vi o filme Liquid Sky. O primeiro fato notável é que com certeza ele tem a pior trilha sonora de todos os tempos. Mas o visual é realmente interessante, e a estória até que prende a atenção. Uma clássica tosqueira sf dos anos 80.

Baby steps

Avançando lentamente em uma revisão de artigo. A aplicação para os dados americanos funcionou perfeitamente, mas para os dados brasileiros ainda não está satisfatória. O problema é que os dados do brasil claramente tem padrões bem mais complexos.
E ainda assim é bem mais difícil publicar com dados do Brasil.

Bayesian on the road

Depois de 3 dias brigando com uma estimação, agora no ônibus voltando para o rio consigo resolver o problema.
Um problema sutial de identificação em um modelos bayesiano não linear, aonde o problema de identificação era causado conjuntamente pelas priors e pelos valores iniciais.
Mais uma lição para o caderninho.

Apesar da sinopse, não é fácil categorizar esse livro - sempre seria uma redução injusta. Impressionante. Uma das melhores leituras dos últimos anos.

Grande Arnold

Arnold mostrando o que é um político de verdade.
Não sei se fica evidente, mas eu tenho uma grande admiração pelo Arnold. Chegou nos EUA com 10 dólares no bolso, sem falar uma palavra de inglês e conseguiu realizar cada objetivo que teve na vida.
E decepou Thulsa Doom.

O meu artigo "Imposing no-arbitrage conditions in implied volatilities using constrained smoothing splines" já está no early view do Applied Stochastic Models in Business and Industry.

Primeiro objetivo

Primeiro objetivo desse começo de ano foi atingido. Conseguimos finalizar a primeira versão de um artigo novo sobre previsão de curvas de juros hoje. Deve demorar um pouco até submeter, mas o core já está lá. Acho que até o final de janeiro já coloco online.

Matemática e blog

Vi agora que o gênio da matemática Terence Tao publicou o terceiro livro derivado de posts em seu blog. O livro se chama "An epsilon of room: pages from year three of a mathematical blog", e no link há uma versão preliminar do livro em pdf.
A primeira parte é uma revisão de análise real, que complementa muito bem o livro do Folland que eu já citei aqui. As demais partes do livro contém artigos mais técnicos e outros mais expositórios, que para mim, são a parte mais interessante, já que nesses artigos ele expõe de maneira muito clara alguns problemas muito interessantes em matemática.

Ex-detento furta idosa e acaba preso por eletricista

Em Araraquara no jardim da infância as crianças aprendem a ler pelas legendas dos filmes do Charles Bronson.

Handbook of Computational Statistics

Um excelente handbook que está totalmente online é o Handbook of Computational Statistics, editado pelo Gentle, Härdle e Mori. Ele aborda quase todas as técnicas de estatística computacional existentes.
Veio a calhar agora que estou finalizando a escrita de um novo artigo.

Não aprenderam nada

Tudo bem que ando de mau humor, mas ler uma notícia dessas acaba com o dia de qualquer ser civilizado:

Para um update - os dois filmes abaixo, que eu não tinha assistido ainda, são do mais alto nível. Sem contar que a cena final de Quiet Earth é genial.

Por acaso encontrei essa lista dos 250 melhores filmes de sf no IMDB, organizados cronologicamente. Assino embaixo de quase todos os filmes.

Reorganização

Voltei essa semana ao Rio.
O objetivo é planejar o primeiro semestre de 2011, e tentar dar uma boa adiantada nas pesquisas agora em Janeiro, finalizando algumas revisões pendentes.
O objetivo secundário é deixar meu apto mais confortável, já que no semestre passado ele apenas permitia a sobrevivência.
